Online Safety
In simple terms, online safety refers to the act of staying safe online. It is also commonly known as internet safety, e-safety and cyber safety. It encompasses all technological devices which have access to the internet from PCs and laptops to smartphones and tablets.

Being safe online means individuals are protecting themselves and others from online harms and risks which may jeopardise their personal information, lead to unsafe communications or even effect their mental health and wellbeing.

In an ever-changing world, being online is an integral part of children and young people’s lives. The internet and online technology provides new opportunities for young people’s learning and growth, but it can also expose them to new types of risks.Therefore ensuring childrens’ safety on safety online has never been more important.

E-Safety is an important part of keeping children safe at William Fletcher Primary School . We have extensive security measures in place in school, which are monitored both internally and externally, to help safeguard pupils from potential dangers or unsuitable material. E-Safety is taught to all pupils explaining and demonstrating how to stay safe and behave appropriately online. It is constantly re-enforced throughout all aspects of school life.

We can only be successful in keeping children safe online if we work with parents to ensure the e-Safety message is consistent. It is important that parents speak to their children about how they can keep safe and behave appropriately online and help prevent children accessing inappropriate material at home by way of filters and parental controls.

What can I do to help keep my children safe online?
Children are taught about Online Safety throughout their time at the school. However, it is an area that benefits greatly from additional input and reinforcement at home – as a parent or carer you play a key role in helping your child to stay safe online.

Issues that your child may encounter on the internet will vary depending on their age and online activities. Below is a list of different resources/websites to support you in helping to keep your children safe whilst they are online.

You may sometimes feel that your children have better technical skills than you do, however children and young people still need advice and protection when it comes to managing their lives online.
